About Chicago's 30th Ward

Gerrymandered much? You're not imagining things, the boundaries of Chicago's 30th Ward make little sense to anyone except for the members of the City Council that drew the boundaries of the current wards back in 2011.  Chicago's wards are redrawn every 10 years after the city receives the latest Census data.  As the country just completed the 2020 Census, the City Council will redraw the boundaries in 2021, accounting for any population shifts and breaking up the city into 50 contiguous wards that each have roughly the same amount of residents.  The City Council must pass an ordinance containing a description of the redistricted ward map by December 1, 2021.  The approved map does not go into effect until Chicago's next Mayoral/City Council election on February 28th, 2023.  Until then, there are approximately 56,000 residents living in the 30th Ward.

The 30th Ward is made up of portions of different Chicago neighborhoods, including: Avondale, Belmont Central,Belmont Cragin, Portage Park, South Old Irving Park, and Villa District.  As of the 2010 Census, the population of the ward was majority Hispanic and Latine, (66%), and over a quarter, (28%), of its residents identified as White.  All other races and ethnicities represented about 6% of the ward's population (see above pie chart for more details).
